La autoridad alimentaria europea elige a sus científicos
El pasado 29 de abril, la autoridad europea de seguridad alimentaria (AESA, en adelante) nombró a los científicos que a partir de ahora proporcionarán la evaluación técnica de los problemas de seguridad alimentaria que se presenten en la UE, asumiendo una competencia que hasta ahora estaba en manos de la Comisión Europea.
Geoffrey Podger, actual director de la AESA, acogió con satisfacción los nombramientos felicitándose de que el Parlamento Europeo finalmente acordara liberar suficientes fondos para personal. No hay olvidar que la polémica que ha rodeado la financiación de la AESA llegó a amenazar con socavar la credibilidad de la recientemente creada autoridad.
Estos nombramientos, según declaraciones de Podger, significan que la autoridad puede comenzar a dedicarse al trabajo para el que fue creada: trabajar en los problemas de seguridad alimentarias con objeto de llevar a cabo mejoras significativas en este campo, para lo cual es necesario tener un buen cuerpo de científicos.
Los científicos elegidos lo han sido por un periodo de tres años de entre los 1050 que expresaron su interés en una convocatoria abierta.
Estuardo Slorach, Presidente del Comité de AESA, subrayó la importancia de las designaciones: la "capacidad seleccionar sobre mil científicos permitió elegir a expertos altamente cualificados para nuestro Comité científico y los grupos de expertos," , añadiendo que aunque no se ha podido contratar a muchos de los candidatos, el Comité y los grupos de expertos científicos establecerán grupos de trabajo con la esperanza de que estos científicos estén dispuestos a colaborar con la AESA."
