MOBILE TELEPHONY : ERG SEES ROAMING CHARGES DECLINE.

Tariffs for mobile calls from one EU member state to another fell between April-June and July-September 2007. This is the conclusion of the first comparative report of the European Regulators' Group (ERG), published on 17 January, on the implementation of the famous roaming' regulation, in force since 30 June.

Though it is still too early to draw general conclusions, there has already been "a clear reduction," says the ERG, which advises the European Commission on telecoms. Its study was based on data from 150 mobile operators in the Union. Between April and September, tariffs for calls made fell from 0.69 to 0.62 per minute, and received calls from 0.34 to 0.30 per minute.

Since 30 September at the latest, Euro-tariff' has limited charges to 0.49 for making calls and 0.24 for receiving calls when abroad. It will be further reduced in 2008 and 2009.
