On 19 December 2011, the European Commission made payments totalling 39.6 million to Greece and Ireland from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF). This sum, authorised in mid-November by the budgetary authority, will help 6,629 dismissed workers from the construction industry and retail sector back into employment.
