Alcatel announced on February 6 that it had signed an agreement with China Telecom, one of china's leading telecoms operators, increasing the French manufacturer's presence in one of the most promising markets. The contract of an unspecified value, is for the upgrade of the broadband Internet access network in 26 Chinese provinces. According to Alcatel's press release the contract was awarded to Alcatel Shanghai Bell, a subsidiary of Alcatel in China. The upgrade to the network is to allow China Telecom to offer "triple services" such as very fast broadband, videoconferences, television via IP and other multimedia services.

Alcatel, already with a well established presence, first started selling DSL lines in China in 1997 and it can now claim the position of world leader with 74 million DSL lines sold by the end of September 2005. In August 2004...
