AQUACULTURE : AQUACULTURE ACCOUNTED FOR 19% OF FISHERIES OUTPUT IN 2004.

In 2004 the aquaculture sector of EU25 countries accounted for 18.8% of theatotal fisheries production, representing an increase of almost 2% compared to 2000. 78% of the aquaculture production was in marine waters: 63% from the Atlantic and 16% from the Mediterranean. Fish and molluscs represented 45% and 55% of total aquaculture production respectively. The figures come from the latest report published by Eurostat at the end of December. (1)

For Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania and Turkey, aquaculture contributed 16.2% to the total fisheries production, 51% was from inland waters and 96%awas of fish. For Norway and Iceland combined, aquaculture accounted for 13.1% of theatotal fisheries production, with all but a very minor part (less than 1%) beingafrom seawater and of fish.

During the period 1993-1999 the EU-25 aquaculture production rose by 46% froma970,000 tonnes to 1.4 million tonnes. However...
