ARIANE RETAINS COMMERCIAL SUPREMACY IN 1998.

With over 50% of non-military rocket launches for customers throughout the world, Arianespace managed to retain in 1998 its commercial supremacy, and record net profits of some FF70 million, slightly down on the FF77.4 million in 1997, on a consolidated turnover of FF7 billion (FF6.56 million). Fees for rocket launches are billed in US dollars, and the strength of the US currency against most of the European currencies had an effect on the company's net profits. France's Aerospatiale said it had record orders worth FF86.8 billion (USD15.3 billion) in 1998, up from FF74.7 billion in 1997 (USD13.2 billion), and its revenues rose 10 % to FF58 billion (USD10.3 billion). Aerospatiale makes Airbus airliners, ATR regional turboprops, helicopters,tactical and ballistic missiles and Ariane space launchers. Record deliveries of 229 Airbus jets and shipments of ATR planes contributed FF33 billion (USD5.8 billion) to revenues, while the aircraft maintenance business brought in FF900 million (USD159.3 million).
