British Socialist MEP Arlene McCarthy looks set to become the new Chair of the European Parliament's Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee. Ms McCarthy, a Member since 1999, was nominated by UK Labour MEPs on January 18 to fill the shoes of her late colleague Philip Whitehead who died suddenly on December 31, 2005. Stephen Hughes (Socialists, UK), a substitute on the Internal Market Committee, challenged her for the prestigious post but Ms McCarthy won by a "comfortable majority" of the 17 Members present, according to inside sources.

Forty-five-year-old Ms McCarthy has been an MEP since 1999 and has served on the Internal Market Committee since 2000. The committee will be asked to ratify the nomination when it meets on January 24.
