BUDGET: PARLIAMENT COMMITTEE TURNS PAGE ON EUROSTAT AND RECOMMENDS OLAF REFORM.

The Budgetary Control Committee, unlike OLAF's Supervisory Committee (see European Report 2834 for further details), rejects the proposal for a code of conduct between OLAF and the European Commission, which it feels would "undermine OLAF's powers", highlighting instead the need to integrate the issue of information flows between the Anti-Fraud Office and the EU executive and protection of the rights of officials involved in internal inquiries in an overall revision of the basic regulatory framework for OLAF. Committee Vice-Chairman Herbert Bosch (PES, Austria) finally withdrew a more specific amendment, suggesting notably that the Supervisory Committee might assume judicial control over OLAF inquiries, so as to ensure the text a majority.

The Budgetary Control Committee has nevertheless not given up a six-month fight to force the Commission to put some order in the affairs of the Statistical Office.
