BUSINESS RELOCATIONS : FIRMS RELOCATING WITH EU FUNDS SHOULD BE PENALISED, SAYS EP.

The European Parliament voted by a large majority on 14 March to adopt an own initiative report on relocation in the context of regional development. Watered-down in committee (see Europolitics 3024), the report raised some difficulties when it came to the vote in plenary session in Strasbourg. MEPs from across the political spectrum are keen to see the Commission penalise companies that relocate their business whilst receiving financial support from the European Union .

REIMBURSEMENT

"Relocations generally have major economic consequences for the region concerned often resulting in job losses seriously affecting the families involved", said the rapporteur, Belgian Socialist Alain Hutchinson. MEPs therefore recommend the adoption of measures at both EU and national level. They support the Commission's proposal to require the reimbursement of aid provided to companies that relocate their activities within seven years...
