* Telecommunications Session of the EU Council of MinistersEU Ministers responsible for Telecommunications are to meet on December 6 in Brussels. The "Telecoms package" will take centre stage at this Council meeting during which the Member States will try to agree, at the second reading, to the new legal arrangements for the electronic communications sector.* Research Session of the EU Council of MinistersEU Ministers responsible for Research are to meet on December 10 in Brussels. The Belgian Presidency hopes to reach a preliminary agreement in the form of a common position on the proposed Decision establishing the Sixth EU Research Framework Programme (2002-2006).* 'Public awareness of science; building bridges with societyA Belgian presidency conference on "Public awareness of science and technology in Europe and its regions; building bridges with society: benchmarking, best practices and regional diversity" will be held in Brussels from December 17 to 18. The conference aims to boost debate on the relationship between science, society and the citizen. It is hoped that discussions at the event will produce recommendations on issues such as the need for a general public which is well-informed in matters of science and technology, a skilled work force and cultural and democratic aspects of the gap between science, technology and society. EU Research Commissioner, Philippe Busquin, will give the opening address at the conference, which will also feature talks from Commission, government and academic representatives. The event is being co-organised by the European Commission, the Belgian federal office for scientific, technical and cultural affairs, the French Community and the Walloon Region.
