* First European Semantic Web Symposium

The first European Semantic Web Symposium (ESWS 2004) will take place in Heraklion, on the island of Crete (Greece), from May 10 to 12. The World Wide Web Consortium describes the Semantic Web as: "an extension of the current web in which information is given well-defined meaning, better enabling computers and people to work in cooperation". With the launch of several projects under the sixth framework-programme in the technological sector, the EU has shown its commitment to foster the Semantic Web. ESWS 2004 will gather participants interested in the latest web projects and other initiatives in this new area.

The specific themes to be tackled include:

- languages, tools and methodologies for semantic annotation of web data;

- semantic web services;

- semantic web-based knowledge management;

- semantic web trust, privacy, security and intellectual property rights.

* International Conference on Current Research Information Systems

Christened "Putting the sparkle in the knowledge society", the 7th International Conference on Current Research Information Systems (CRIS 2004) will take place from 13 to 15 May in Antwerp (Belgium). CRIS 2004 is aimed at promoting scientific discussion and information exchange on research information systems. It continues the tradition of encouraging the sharing of experiences among developers, producers and users of research information systems. The conference is further intended to foster discussion on novel approaches and ideas on international dialogue, pan-European cooperation, and the transfer and use of information related to CRIS.

The conference will tackle the following subjects in particular:

- CRIS supporting processes for innovation, research and development

(e.g. European research area, national and international cooperation, trans-disciplinary research);

- benefits of CRIS to researchers and other users

- demands on CRIS for quality

- technological developments

- from information to knowledge
