* Summit for the future 2005 - Amsterdam, The Netherlands

The Club of Amsterdam is organising an international conference under the theme "Summit for the future 2005", to be held from January 26-28 in Amsterdam. The main objective is to gain a deeper understanding and more critical insight into issues facing the Knowledge Society. Along with various plenary sessions there will be five workshops tackling the major knowledge issues: trade and the services industry; energy; healthcare; media and entertainment; science and technology. The results of these workshops will be debated at the final plenary session.

* ICT 21 Forum - The contribution of Information and Communication Technologies to sustainable development

On February 3 and 4, international professionals will be in Valenciennes, France, to look at ICTs' contribution to sustainable development. They will tackle various themes such as digital illiteracy, TV of tomorrow, eco-design for ICTs, etc.

As an international forum TIC21 will also be the official UNITAR (UN) site for preparing contributions for the next international summits: the Second World Summit of Cities and Local Authorities on the Information Society, to be held in Bilbao, from November 9 to 11; and the second phase of the World Summit on the Information Society, to be held in Tunis from November 16 to 18.

TIC 21 will also:

* be an introduction to databases, information and telematic applications, materials, methods, training solutions;

* help to resolve human and technological problems concerning system compatibility;

* be a forum to share expertise on joint initiatives between various groups, companies, associations, media, etc.

* The future of EU research and opportunities for new Member States

A conference on the future of EU research and development policies and opportunities for the new Member States will take place in Warsaw, Poland, on February 4. The event will be attended by EU Science and Research Commissioner Janez Potocnik and Polish Minister for Scientific Research and Information Technology, Michal Kleiber. The event is being organised by the Polish Lisbon Strategy Forum and the Polish National Contact Point for the EU's research programmes.
