* Information security awards, Barcelona, Spain

Awards for achievements in the field of information security will be presented at the RSA conference in Barcelona, taking place from November 3 to 5. The awards recognise and reward achievements in information security in four categories: policy; research and development; education and training; and implementation. Further nominations for the policy category are invited by the organisers. All entries will be judged by an independent panel of respected industry professionals.

* Presentation of initial nanoroadmap project results, Rome, Italy

A conference to present the first results of the EU funded Nanoroadmap (NRM) will take place in Rome, Italy, on November 4 and 5. Launched in January 2004, NRM is funded under the sixth framework programme (FP6). Its objective is to provide coherent scenarios and technology roadmaps for the application of nanotechnology. The roadmaps should help European players, both public and private, to optimise their efforts in three areas in particular: materials; health and medical systems; and energy.

* Symposium addresses nanotechnology and patenting, The Hague, the Netherlands

An international symposium on nanotechnology and patenting will take place at the European Patent Office in The Hague, the Netherlands, on November 9 and 10.

The symposium sessions will include:

- scientific routes to nanotechnology;

- industrial strategies for nanotechnology;

- long term visions for nanotechnology - science fiction or reality?

- nanoelectronic applications;

- thin film technology for optoelectronic components;

- nanotechnology and consumer products;

- drug delivery solutions.

The event will also include a presentation by the European Commission's head of unit for nanotechnology and nanosciences, Renzo Tomellini, on a European strategy for nanotechnology.
