The table lists, in alphabetical order of the Member States and the Benelux, the most important national laws, regulations and decrees concerning trade marks and design.

The title of the legal sources is given, where possible, in the original language. In some cases, an abbreviated version of the full official title has been given. However, all possible attempts have been made to keep as close to the official title as possible. A translation into the language of this Brochure is given underneath in italics, where necessary.

The list contains only the main legal sources, namely legislation on trade marks and designs, and implementing legislation or regulations on procedures applicable for trade mark and design cases and fees to be paid to the national office. To keep within reasonable limits, some secondary legislation with only an indirect impact on trade mark registration proceedings, such as on geographical indications, and certain less important procedural rules had to be omitted.

Where possible, the date of promulgation has been indicated. However, the date of entry into force has been omitted, in particular because at times the provisions of a law or regulation enter into force on different dates.

Under the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), Members of the WTO are obliged to notify relevant national legislation. It can be expected that in the future most of the legislation on industrial property of the Member States will be available in the languages of the WTO Agreement. However, the translations available by the WTO at the time of publishing do not always refer to the latest Member State legislation, and accordingly have not been included in this edition.

Column 2 lists the abbreviations used in the Brochure for ease of reference. They do not necessarily coincide with the official abbreviations used in the Member State concerned.

This edition includes also the national laws concerning trade marks and designs in Bulgaria and Rumania and in the candidate countries, namely Croatia and Turkey.
