CHEMICAL INDUSTRY : INDUSTRY NETWORKS NEED REFORM, SAYS HIGH LEVEL GROUP.

Current industry networks are failing to ensure sufficient exploitation of research and development in Europe, and may need to be reformed, according to the EU's High Level Group on the competitiveness of the European chemicals industry.

The point was made in a set of recommendations adopted by the group on 18 December. One specific point agreed was that the existing European technology platform for the chemical industry (SusChem) should broaden its mandate in order to increase cooperation with companies in other sectors. According to Gernot Klotz, an executive director for the European Chemical Industry Council, the intention is to change the mandate so that the platform can "really work together" with other industries in order to make the best use of its R&D breakthroughs.
