The inquiry by the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) into the resignation of former Health Commissioner John Dalli presents a "series of potential problems," the President of OLAF's Supervisory Committee, Johan Denolf, has said in a letter to the president of the European Parliament's Committee on Budgetary Control (CONT). The letter(1), presented on 12 December 2012, follows the adoption of a formal opinion by the committee the previous day.

In his letter, Denolf says that the committee has examined OLAF's work in terms of its compatibility with the principles of proportionality, legality and impartiality, as well as respect for fundamental rights, procedural gauarantees and data protection criteria. Without going into too much detail, Denolf confirms that the committee's analysis has revealed "potential problems," and that recommendations have been sent to the director-general of OLAF, "which require a discussion with him on a more systemic level...
