(1) El 22 de junio de 2018, el Consejo autorizó a la Comisión a entablar negociaciones con la Comisión de Pesca del Pacífico Norte para la adhesión de la Unión a la Convención para la Conservación y Ordenación de los Recursos Pesqueros de Alta Mar del Océano Pacífico Norte (en lo sucesivo, «Convención»).
(2) La Unión tiene competencias para adoptar medidas de conservación de los recursos biológicos marinos en el marco de la política pesquera común y para celebrar acuerdos con terceros países y organizaciones internacionales.
(3) En virtud de la Decisión 98/392/CE del Consejo (2), la Unión es Parte contratante de la Convención de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Derecho del Mar (CNUDM), de 10 de diciembre de 1982, que exige que todas las Partes contratantes de la CNUDM cooperen en la conservación y administración de los recursos biológicos del mar.
(4) En virtud de la Decisión 98/414/CE del Consejo (3), la Unión es Parte contratante del Acuerdo sobre la aplicación de las disposiciones de la Convención de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Derecho del Mar, de 10 de diciembre de 1982, relativas a la conservación y ordenación de las poblaciones de peces transzonales y las poblaciones de peces altamente migratorios.
(5) En su sexta sesión anual, celebrada del 23 al 25 de febrero de 2021, la Comisión de Pesca del Pacífico Norte invitó a la Unión a adherirse a la Convención.
(6) La adhesión a la Convención debe promover la coherencia del planteamiento de conservación de la Unión en todos los océanos del mundo y reforzar su compromiso con la conservación a largo plazo y el uso sostenible de los recursos pesqueros a nivel mundial.
