DEUTSCHE TELEKOM CONFIRMS PURCHASE OF MEDIAONE CELLULAR-PHONE ASSETS.

Deutsche Telekom has confirmed that it will purchase East European cellular-phone assets from MediaOne International Inc. for around USD2 billion (Euro 1.85 billion). With the purchase of a 22.5% stake in Polska Telefonia Cyfrowa, Deutsche Telekom will double its stake in the Polish company to 45%. PTC is Poland's largest cellular-phone operator with 1.5 million subscribers and a 41% share of that market. In Hungary, Deutsche Telekom will acquire 49% of Westel Radiotelefon's Westel 450 analogue service and 49% of its Westel 900 digital cellular service.
