Deutsche Telekom will only press ahead with its planned construction of a new fibre-optics network in Germany on condition that a favourable regulatory framework was put in place, said its owner on February 2 digging in his heels in the conflict between the Commission and German regulatory authority. "From a business point of view, we can only continue with the construction of the network in 10 cities and then 40 others if the regulatory framework is clear", the head of the German telecommunications giant, Kai-Uwe Ricke, told a congress in Berlin. Deutsche Telekom had said last year that it planned to invest euro 3 billion in the construction of a new network with high-speed Internet access (VDSL). Ten big cities in Germany are scheduled to be linked up to the network by mid 2006, followed by 40 more cities over the next two years. But "we have to make sure that investment in the high-speed network brings corresponding returns", Mr Ricke said.
