The German telecommunications giant Deutsche Telekom saw its net profits fall 45% in 1999 to Euro 1.2 billion, according to preliminary figures issued by the group on January 20. In accounting for the drop, the former monopoly pointed to the reduction in its profit margins in stationary telephone networks; losses incurred in conjunction with the relaunch of acquisitions and costs arising from its increase in capital.
