La UE discutirá la base científica para la coexistencia
En una nueva tentativa de superar el último obstáculo en la carretera larga y espinosa hacia la autorización de cultivos transgénicos en la UE, la Comisión Europea ha puesto en marcha desde el pasado 24 de abril una mesa redonda para analizar los últimos resultados derivados de la investigación en materia de coexistencia de los cultivos transgénicos y no transgénicos.
La mesa redonda incluirá a representantes industriales, ONGs, consumidores y otros operadores del sector con el objetivo de discutir la base científica para la adopción de cualesquiera medidas agronómica y de otro tipo que puedan ser necesarias para facilitar la viabilidad de la coexistencia de estas diversas prácticas agrícolas.
Dicha medida, que fue anunciada el mes pasado por la UE, forma parte de un “paquete biotecnológico” que se presentará a finales de mes.
Por otra parte, en la Comisión existe la creciente preocupación de que el problema de la coexistencia suponga un nuevo escollo que impida la reanudación de los cultivos transgénicos. Dos Comisarios de la UE han tomado ahora el mando: el Comisario de Investigación, Philippe Busquin, y Comisario de Agricultura, Franz Fischler.
En el pasado, ambos Comisarios pusieron de manifiesto que la coexistencia entre cultivos diferentes es un problema exclusivamente agronómico y económico, y que no se refiere a la seguridad alimentaria, puesto que solamente los cultivos transgénicos autorizados se comercializarán.
El debate opone a los ecologistas y a la Comisión. Mientras los primeros exigen una legislación estricta a nivel comunitario que establecezca el principio general de que cualquier coste adicional incurrido por los agricultores...
