DOCUMENT ON PORTUGUESE BUDGET RELEASED FOLLOWING OMBUDSMAN PRESSURE.

A document from the Portuguese authorities outlining how Lisbon planned to reduce its budget deficit has recently been released by the European Commission, after the EU Ombudsman, Nikiforos Diamandouros, intervened in the case. The Commission initially refused to give the document to a Portuguese Socialist MEP Paolo Casaca, arguing that disclosure could jeopardise Portugal's economic and financial interests. At the time, Portugal was under pressure to bring its budget deficit below the 3% of GDP limit, as required by the EU Treaty. Mr Casaca complained to the Ombudsman in January 2005 about the refusal.
