The effects of the financial and economic crisis are starting to be felt in terms of employment. Estimates published on 16 December by Eurostat state that the number of persons employed in the eurozone decreased by 0.1% (80,000 persons) in the third quarter of 2008, compared with the previous quarter. In the same period, the number of persons employed in the EU remained virtually stable. In the second quarter of 2008, growth rates were +0.2% in the eurozone and +0.1% in the EU.
