EMPLOYMENT : HUMAN RESOURCES DIRECTORS NOT WON OVER BY EUROPE.

Although they are expecting a better outlook for 2010, human resources (HR) directors are aware of the challenges still ahead, as seen in the results of the fifth human resources barometer, published on 25 February. Conducted at the initiative of the European Club for human resources (EChr), it also reveals the determination of HR directors, who are less convinced of Europe's positive impact, to see this area given a higher place on the European political agenda. "This study reveals a clear strengthening of the HR function in its capacity to respond to most commercial and financial expectations by resolving short-term needs and keeping coherent the commitment of businesses to their employees," commented Jean-Pascal Arnaud, vice-president for HR and communication for Chantelle group.

Leonardo Sforza, head of European affairs and research at Hewitt Associates, described 2010 as a year of transition during which companies will try to improve their competitiveness and prepare for the post-crisis. He said this transition "will lead to better balance between defensive measures - like those aimed at reducing production, capacity and salary costs - and growth initiatives aimed at improving productivity, talent and leadership capacities or to explore new merger and acquisition opportunities".
