Total hourly labour costs in the European Union rose by 3.6% in nominal terms in the first quarter of 2001, compared to a revised 3.4% in the previous quarter, the EU Statistical Office reported on July 5. Costs in the Euro zone grew by 3.1% compared to the same period the previous year, In the fourth quarter of 2000 the increase was a revised 3.2%.The smallest annual rise was in Italy (2.3%), and the biggest in the United Kingdom (5.9%) and Finland (5.2%). In industry, hourly labour costs in the Euro-zone rose by 3.2% whilst for the EU as a whole the increase was 3.4%. From the data available, the smallest annual rise in costs was in Sweden (1.7%)...
