Five EU member states launched on January 23 a European Gendarmerie, a force capable of carrying out police missions abroad under military or civil command. The Gendarmerie (EUROGENDFOR) has not been put together under European Union auspices as such but is expected to be put at the disposal in the first instance of the EU for any crisis-management operations for which it might be suitable. It could also be made available to international organisations such as the UN or NATO, carrying out tasks ranging from peace-keeping to training.
