The European Commission announced, on 23 December 2008, that the European digital library Europeana is up and running again but that it would only be possible to access it in a test mode for the time being. The library had been offline for maintenance work for three weeks. Internet users came in their droves (ten million hits per hour) to access the European portal on its 20 November launch day.
