EUROSTAT SURVEYS EU INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION SECTOR.

Information and communication (IC) businesses, including manufacturing activities (production of office machinery, computers, radio, television, communication equipment) and services (post and telecommunications, computer services, research and development), play a key role in competitiveness of enterprises. In 1996, telecommunication services recorded the highest absolute and average turnover per enterprise of all information and communication businesses, in most EU Member States. Companies active in this field generally achieve the highest productivity of all IC related sectors. These findings are included in a report published on December 16 by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities, on information and communications activities in the EU in 1996.The report's key findings can be summarised as follows: - Postal and courier services, the second pillar of the communication sector, account for 60% of the 2.2 million people employed in communications.- Companies in computer...
