FRANCE TELECOM PLANNING TO SHED 17,000 STAFF BY 2008.

France Telecom is planning to shed 17,000 staff worldwide by 2008 though without any forced redundancies, Finance Director Gervais Pelissier indicated on February 14. France Telecom is anticipating natural wastage totalling 22 000 posts in France between 2006 in 2008, and will take on 6000 new staff, according to the Finance Director. "This reduction of 16,000 posts in France will be supplemented by a further thousand abroad", Mr Pelissier indicated in a telephone conference.

These staff cuts represent between 8 and 10% of the group's current workforce. Mr Pelissier indicated that "since numbers will be cut through natural wastage there will be no additional cost to the group". He insisted on the fact that these cuts are not redundancies but non-replacement of staff.
