FRANCE TO DEMAND CULTURAL EXEMPTION FROM WTO FOR AUDIOVISUALS.

Catherine Trautmann, France's Minister of Culture and Communication, defended the principle of a cultural exemption from trade rules on August 23 in anticipation of the new round of multilateral World Trade Organisation (WTO) negotiations at the end of the year. Opening the 20th summer university for communication in Hourtin (south-western France), she indicated that in the course of the negotiations she would be putting the case for an exclusion for the audiovisual sector. The Minister claimed audiovisual professionals remain opposed to any negotiation on investment being resumed on identical bases, i.e. with so broad a definition of investment as to encompass the audiovisual sector.
