MEPs adopted, on 10 February in Strasbourg, a report by Marc Tarabella (S&D, Belgium) on gender equality in the EU, calling for equal pay, paternity leave to be addressed at EU level and a directive on combating violence against women. "Men and women have everything to gain from a more equal society, free from gender stereotypes," said the rapporteur.

Parliament firstly regretted that its resolution of 18 November 2008 (2008/2012(INI)), inviting the Commission to revise Directive 75/117/EEC relating to the application of the principle of equal pay for men and women, had gone unheeded. MEPs thus invited the Commission, via this report, to swiftly present them with a proposal to curb the difference in salaries between men and women, which, for equal responsibilities, amounts to approximately 15%.
