Germany has joined the relatively small group of EU member states that have fulfilled their obligations regarding the transposition of the 2006 Data Retention Directive (2006/24/EC), it was indicated to Europolitics Information Society on 8 January. The directive places an obligation on telecom firms to retain at least six months' worth of e-mails, phone calls and internet data for possible police use. The deadline for the transposition of the directive into national law fell on 15 September 2007.
