After being rejected by the European Parliament's Committee on Budgets (BUDG), on 11 October 2011, the application for intervention from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) for workers laid off by the French automotive group Renault has at last been approved by the European Parliament. The S&D group, which had earlier rejected the request, backed it on 15 December, giving the green light to the release of 24.5 million.

"We have a sense of responsibility and could not vote collectively against EGF support. We wanted this fund in support of workers, we defended it and we brought it into existence. But the pill is hard to swallow when we see it being manipulated at times," commented the Employment and Social Affairs Committee's Chair, French Socialist Pervenche Beres.
