A deal was clinched last month to scrap the sunlight measure. But it has now been made official, Mr Mann confirmed on the eve of December 5. The upshot: All references to sunlight will be taken out of the draft Directive, which primarily seeks to protect workers from exposure to artificial sources of radiation, including lasers, x-rays, welding torches and ultra-violet lamps.

A separate 'sunlight clause' aiming to protect outdoor workers was watered down in a September plenary vote in Parliament and the European Commission has since revised its proposal by withdrawing it altogether. "With this decision we have totally buried the grotesque idea of regulating sunlight", Mr Mann said just in anticipation of the deal being finalised late on December 6...
