Music and film piracy on the internet have forced the film and record industries to consider alternative offers that have changed consumption habits in sectors that have not witnessed such a revolution for decades. Record companies insist the music industry is facing the most serious crisis in its history. CD sales fell by 10.7% in the terms of volume and 12.2% in value terms over the first three quarters of 2004. Record companies blame this collapse on illegal downloading on the internet, and "peer-to-peer" swapping (between computers), a trend they are seeking to halt trough legal action against internet users. The outlook is not, however, all black.

The music industry has responded by introducing its own downloading services and 2004 has seen a multiplication of legal platforms. The music market on-line currently remains marginal (some 4.5% of sales worldwide). However, according to American analysts Forrester Research, this sector will take off in 2007, and may be worth a billion Euro in Europe (3.5 in 2009). According...
