INTERNET: EURID SIGNS CONTRACT WITH COMMISSION TO MANAGE .EU DOMAIN NAME.

Only Eurid accredited registrars will be authorised to offer registration services. The list of registrars will be published on the Eurid web site (www.eurid.org). By the end of the year, Eurid will finalise contracts with Icann (Internet corporation for assigned names and numbers) to incorporate .eu into the domain name system (DNS).

The first stage of .eu domain name registration allows Member States and Accession States to give exclusive use of their official denomination to a body chosen to represent them. The process should be completed by now since Member States were given two months to take necessary action, following the entry into force of the Commission regulation laying down public policy rules for the setting up of the .eu TLD (ie 2 months from April 30).
