INTERNET: GERMANY SEEKS TO MOTIVATE BUSINESS BEHIND EUROPEAN 'QUAERO' PROJECT.

Germany's Economic Affairs Ministry invited several companies on January 16 to discuss their potential commitment to a European Quaero search engine project, said a Ministry spokesman, confirming reports in the Financial Times Deutschland (FTD) economic daily. The paper reports that Bertelsmann, SAP, Siemens and Deutsche Telekom were invited to attend the meeting. Interest in Quaero currently remains modest in Germany, according to the FTD.

The project was launched at a Franco-German Ministerial Summit in April 2005 in Reims. Initiated by French President Jacques Chirac, it aims to establish a European counterpart to the American Google group, with a multimedia search engine for images, video, audio and text.

Only Empolis, a Bertelsmann subsidiary operated through publishers Gruner & Jahr has expressed a genuine interest in participating in the project...
