The European Commission received, on 10 February, the signatures of 17 major social networking sites which promise to better protect the under-18s, who are particularly vulnerable to the misuse of their private data.

While refusing to propose regulatory measures, the Commission deemed it necessary was to respond to the growing success of these sites, where subscribers can post their messages, photos or videos and make them available to other users. However, sometimes these services have very bad experiences in store, such as grooming': an adult establishing a friendly relation' with a child for sexual purposes.

These sites attract more than 41.7 million regular users in Europe and this number is forecast to grow to 107.4 million by 2012, according to the Commission.
