Abstract
Study on natural resources of Pogradec intended to identify these potential, advantages and problems
faced by them, make a geographic analysis of natural components and spatial transformations,
environmental and landscape that have occurred under the inuence of the human factor. Also
the study aims to make an assessment of the possibilities they oer, select and propose ways for
renewal in economic and social development of the district, which although relatively rich in
natural resources, such assets are not used in the interest of development of the district.
Pogradec district lies in South East region of Albania, in the northern geographical latitudes 40°
53’26 “ and east longitude 20 ° 39’55”. ere are many natural resources, which directly related to
physical and geographical features of it such as: forests, mineral resources of steel- nickel, chrome,
coal, upper valley Shkumbin with a scenic view and very clean waters, Kamja stone, canyon of Llenga,
plane of Radokal and Selca, caves of Barbardha and Radokal. In water resources separated Ohrid
lake, the country’s largest lake aer that of Shkodra, declared a natural monument by UNESCO
in 1980 for the unique ora and fauna. In these assets included also karst springs Drilon and St.
Naum that spill into the lake, waterfalls in Homezh etc. e sensibility of the community and local
government should be in a higher level to avoid natural and human degradation and simultaneously
to increase the rate of exploitation of these resources in view of sustainable development.
Keywords: Natural resources, sustainable, development, degradation.
Introducion
Pogradec district lies in the northern geographical latitudes 40 ° 53’26 “ and east longitude
20 ° 39’55” in South East region of Albania and included in Korca district, in the northern
part of it. Bounded on the north and northwest of Librazhd, on the west by Gramsci,
having as a natural border west and northwest highlands of Mokra. In the south it borders
the district of Korca, starting from Valamara mount west to Dry mount east. With
Macedonia, border passes Ohrid lake, from Tushemisht south to ana Neck north.
e period of democratic developments found Pogradec as one of the “protected” and
maintained districts in terms of protecting the environment, natural resources and with
less impact on them. e demographic movement of the population, which in general
has not been controlled and administered properly due to capacity but also because of
the commitment of scarce government, brought signicant consequences in natural
resources. Inappropriate multiple buildings, population growth and consumption, lack
of standards and environmental institutions, the lack of environmental knowledge and
other factors related directly or indirectly to the environment and natural resources, have
caused signicant damage in consequence of environmental factors, already worrying not
only for management structures, but also for the population. Of a special importance is
the preservation and rational use of these resources, creating conditions for their renewal.
erefore, studies consistently sought to discover new reserves of natural resources,
dening ways for a sustainable management, although today is a positive spirit and an
increased awareness for the environment and natural resources. Local governments are
working to secure the required investment and ways to protect these assets.
