The European Commission's competition policy in telecommunications will not discourage investment in next generation networks, Digital Agenda Commissioner Neelie Kroes said, on 8 March, at a conference of European cable operators.

The commissioner was referring to an approach that aims to give alternative operators access to the telecommunications network at a "reasonable price and in a non-discriminatory manner," and to allow them to use their own equipment and provide competitive and innovative services.

Contrary to the assertions of certain historical operators, Commissioner Kroes stated that "if such networks are open to competition and innovation, consumers will be willing to pay a fair price for services that respond better to their evolving needs". She added: "That increased demand for enhanced services is essential to sustain investment in tomorrow's networks".
