NON-DISCRIMINATION: GENDER EQUALITY STILL NOT A REALITY.

The Commission has therefore been invited to conduct a study into ways of implementing EU legislation in this domain and to take the necessary action in the event of non-transposition or infringement of the legislation. MEPs insist, in particular, on reducing the gender pay gap, which for the EU is estimated at 15%. They have also invited member states and candidate countries to provide statistics on these differences in all professional categories. Furthermore, the report emphasises the importance of ensuring that pension schemes are not discriminatory against women and the need to avoid gender-based segregation in the workplace. Member states were also invited to encourage young women to study non-traditional subjects.

Explaining that women have been under-represented in the EU's political decision-making bodies and that in certain current and future member states the proportion of female parliamentarians is lower than the worldwide average of 15.6%, the Parliament invites all political parties, at national and European level to "adopt appropriate strategies to redress the imbalance and reach a fair balance between the representation of women and men in elected assemblies".
