La Comisión presenta los resultados del análisis en Francia de una cabra afectada por una EET
Tras el anuncio de que un grupo francés de investigación ha señalado la posible presencia de una infección por una EET en el cerebro de una cabra, que los análisis no permiten distinguir de la EEB, la Comisión Europea ha presentado los datos remitidos por las autoridades francesas al Laboratorio Comunitario de Referencia (LCR) para las EET, situado en Weybridge (Inglaterra), para su evaluación por un grupo de expertos. Las EET son encefalopatías espongiformes transmisibles, como por ejemplo la EEB, que afecta a los bovinos, y la tembladera, que afecta a ovinos y caprinos. El grupo de expertos evaluará en las dos próximas semanas los datos científicos para determinar si indican la presencia de la EEB en la cabra. Este incidente aislado no presenta ningún riesgo para la salud pública ya que la cabra y el rebaño al que pertenecía no entraron ni en la cadena alimentaria humana ni en la animal.
Nunca se ha detectado la EEB en circunstancias normales en rumiantes que no sean bovinos. Se ha considerado teóricamente posible su presencia en las cabras o en otros rumiantes, pero nunca se ha detectado. No obstante, desde hace muchos años se aplican medidas de seguridad a todos los rumiantes de cría (bovinos, ovinos y caprinos) a fin de proteger al máximo la salud pública. Estas medidas de seguridad incluyen la prohibición de alimentar a los animales con proteínas de origen animal en forma de harinas de carne y hueso, la eliminación de materiales de riesgo específicos de la cadena alimentaria humana y animal (es decir, la retirada de determinados tejidos como el cerebro, la médula espinal, una parte de los intestinos, etc.), el sacrificio de los rebaños afectados por la tembladera (una enfermedad de caprinos y ovinos similar a la EEB pero que no se transmite a los seres humanos), así como un programa de vigilancia/seguimiento de las EET en todos los Estados miembros.
La cabra analizada se detectó en el marco del programa de vigilancia de la UE destinado a detectar cepas sospechosas de EET en pequeños rumiantes. Se ha sometido a análisis a más de 140 000 cabras desde abril de 2002.
