Members of the European Parliament's Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) wish to co-legislate on the draft regulation setting maximum acceptable levels for radioactive contamination of food and feed following a nuclear accident or in any other case of radiological emergency. On 13 January, they urged the Commission to change the legal basis of its proposal (currently Article 31 Euratom) to keep Parliament from being relegated to the status of a consultation body.

"The radioactive contamination of food is clearly a concern for European public health and, as such, it is essential that this legislation is decided on that basis, with the European Parliament as a co-legislator," declared Michele Rivasi (Greens-EFA, France).
