The Finnish government has announced its plan to increase spending on research by Euro 230 millions a year, a move which has disappointed many researchers, due to earlier announcements that the government was going to allocate a further Euro 405 million to research. The new government coalition in Finland, led by Prime Minister Anneli Jaeaetteenmaeki, seemed prepared initially to implement this additional finance of Euro 405 million, based on the recommendation of the national science and technology council. This would have raised annual public spending on research from the current level of Euro 1.4 billion to Euro 1.8 billion.
