RESEARCH GRANTS FOR LESS DEVELOPED REGIONS.

The European Commission appointed the first ERA (European Research Area) chairs, on 10 February, providing funding up to 2.4 million for each of the eleven universities and technical institutes that have been selected in less developed EU regions. Those institutions will now have to award the chairs to "outstanding academics who have the capacity to raise standards and attract more high-level staff as well as money from other sources".
