The winner of the European competition on the most accessible city, for buildings and public areas, transport, information and communication (including information and communication technologies), is Avila, Spain. On 2 December 2010, the European Day of People with Disabilities, it was recognised for its attention to persons with disabilities and the exemplary measures it has put in place to improve accessibility in the urban environment.

This contest, organised for the first time this year by the European Commission, targets European cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants. Four finalists - Avila (Spain), Barcelona (Spain), Koln (Germany) and Turku (Finland) - were selected from among the 66 cities competing.
