Every f‌irst-contact ocial needs to perform his/her
tasks under demanding circumstances, frequently
encountering people from dierent cultures, a
dierent social background and with dierent
life experiences. This interesting, but extremely
demanding working environment can have an impact
on your psychological well-being. In the discharge of
your duties, you may experience varied emotions,
ranging from compassion, through indierence, to
rejection of the individuals you deal with every day.
This in turn can aect the eectiveness and quality
of your work, and your ability to take appropriate
decisions and actions.
It is important to be aware of those factors as well as
of your personal circumstances and make a constant
eort to minimise their impact. If needed, don’t
hesitate to ask your colleagues or supervisors for
support or to seek professional counselling.
See Section “Be aware of your personal
circumstances” of the Practical Guide.
