SPAIN POSTPONES LAUNCH OF UMTS FOR TEN MONTHS.

The deadline for launching third-generation UMTS mobile phone services in Spain has been postponed from August 1, 2001 to June 1, 2002, announced the Spanish Science and Technology Ministry on April 25. The Ministry explained that the adjournment was due to the difficulties being faced by telecoms companies in getting hold of UMTS terminal and network technology by the Summer and has also led to the postponement of the auction for the award of two new GSM mobile phone licences, which had initially been scheduled at some time between now and the end of April.The extra time will allow the existing GSM operators (Telef[cent]nica, Airtel, Amena and XFera) to use the 1,800 MHz bandwidth (that the Government had been planning to...
