A European Pact for GenderaEquality was endorsedaby EU leaders at the Spring Summit on 24 March. The idea was the joint initiative of six member states (Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Sweden and the Czech Republic) and the pact includes three sets of measures aimed at reducing the differences between men and women.

Objective N[degrees] 1: to combat 'gender stereotypes' in the labour market. This involves promoting women's employment in all age brackets, reducing gender gaps inaemployment, and combating all forms of discrimination, promoting equal pay for equal work, looking at ways to make welfare systems more employment-friendly for women, promoting women's empowerment in political and economic life and mainstreaming the gender perspective into all public activities.

Objective N[degrees] 2: 'Measures to promote a better balance between work and family life.' This includes meeting the target of childcare facilities for at least 90% of all children between 3 and the compulsory...
