The European Commission temporarily approved, on 6 January under EU state aid rules, a 380 million capital injection into Piraeus Bank provided under the Greek support scheme for credit institutions. The latter was approved by the Commission on 19 November 2008 and prolonged, respectively amended, several times. The Greek authorities had committed to notify individually any recapitalisation, which would not be the first for a given bank.
